This also logs handwriting and typing for Cortana, which requires an additional step (see next tip). In addition, Microsoft will also not collect data. If you’re only using speech services that do not rely on the cloud and only exist on your device, such as Narrator and Windows Speech Recognition, they will still work even if this setting is turned off. Microsoft stated that the voice data collected helps improve the speech services.
This is because certain speech services exist both in the cloud and on your device. To use voice input, you must allow speech input tracking. You may not be able to turn off Cortana, but you can limit the assistant by turning off certain settings that it requires (see below). You can still turn Cortana off by editing the Windows registry, but that might be a bit too involved for casual users. You used to be able to turn off Cortana with an easy slider toggle, but Microsoft removed that option after the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. Unfortunately, Cortana must log your data to accomplish this. Cortana can set reminders, track packages and flights, send emails and text, manage your calendar, and more. The more you use Cortana, the more personalized your experience will be. Like Siri for iOS and Google Assistant for Android, Cortana helps you get things done in Windows 10. Don’t forget that you’ll have to repeat the process in every browser you use (i.e., Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge). You’ll also have to head over to /en-us/opt-out and turn them off there, as well, to be completely free from personalized ads.
